- Wealth does not equal happiness (Luke 6:24; Ecclesiastes 6:9; Daniel 5:23-24)
- Pleasure can be as dangerous as pain (Luke 6:25; Proverbs 25:16; 2 Samuel 23:15-17)
- Live for God's praise (Luke 6:26; Matthew 25:21; Romans 15:13)
Luke 6:24
24 "What sorrow awaits you who are rich, for you have your only happiness now.
Ecclesiastes 6:9
9 Enjoy what you have rather than desiring what you don't have. Just dreaming about nice things is meaningless—like chasing the wind.
Daniel 5:23-24
But you have not honored the God who gives you the breath of life and controls your destiny! 24 So God has sent this hand to write this message. 25 This is the message that was written: MENE, MENE, TEKEL, and PARSIN. 26 This is what these words mean: Mene means 'numbered'—God has numbered the days of your reign and has brought it to an end. 27 Tekel means 'weighed'—you have been weighed on the balances and have not measured up. 28 Parsin means 'divided'—your kingdom has been divided and given to the Medes and Persians.
Luke 6:25
25 What sorrow awaits you who are fat and prosperous now, for a time of awful hunger awaits you. What sorrow awaits you who laugh now, for your laughing will turn to mourning and sorrow.
Proverbs 25:16
16 Do you like honey? Don't eat too much, or it will make you sick!
2 Samuel 23:15
15 David remarked longingly to his men, "Oh, how I would love some of that good water from the well by the gate in Bethlehem." 16 So the Three broke through the Philistine lines, drew some water from the well by the gate in Bethlehem, and brought it back to David. But he refused to drink it. Instead, he poured it out as an offering to the LORD. 17 "The LORD forbid that I should drink this!" he exclaimed. "This water is as precious as the blood of these men* who risked their lives to bring it to me." So David did not drink it.
C.S. Lewis
The long and the short of it is that you have let the man slip through your fingers. And now for your blunders. On your own showing you first of all allowed the patient to read a book he really enjoyed, because he enjoyed it and not in order to make clever remarks about it to his new friends. In the second place, you allowed him to walk down to the old mill and have tea there—a walk through country he really likes, and taken alone. In other words you allowed him two real positive Pleasures. Were you so ignorant as not to see the danger of this? - The Screwtape Letters, pp.63-64
Luke 6:26
26 What sorrow awaits you who are praised by the crowds, for their ancestors also praised false prophets.
Matthew 25:21
21 The master was full of praise. "Well done, my good and faithful servant. You have been faithful in handling this small amount, so now I will give you many more responsibilities. Let's celebrate together!"
Romans 15:13 (Scripture)
13 I pray that God, the source of hope, will fill you completely with joy and peace because you trust in him. Then you will overflow with confident hope through the power of the Holy Spirit.
